in the battle ground state of florida, but not before many counties saw a record, gigantic lines. and phil keating joins us from tampa, and the numbers. it was crazy yesterday, phil. >> absolutely, reportedly six hour waits at certain locations in miami-dade county outside of the precinct on friday, three and a half hours all day long to stand in line, shuffle forward and finally cost their ballot. the numbers are big despite the fact in 2008 there was early voting on this sunday before election day, this year, there is not. and that's been a point of convention, democrats and democrat leaning groups have called that voting suppression engineered by the republican dominated legislature and governor's office in the state of florida. however, despite those cries, the numbers have been as good as they were back in 2008. take a look at numbers right now. nearly 4 million, this is through friday, nearly 4 million floridians voted early, by early voting or absentee ballot. and the way it breaks down, the most early voters stand in line and cast their ballot, 45% of those people are registered de

in state of florida. florida has seen record turnout for both early and absentee ballots. steve harrigan is live with more on that. hi, steve. >> three hours left of early voting here in florida and turnout has been strong throughout the state. polling place in tampa linings are about hour long but some reports are four or five hours in miami-dade. 4 million people have voted early or by absentee ballot. the period for early voting is shorter this year than it was a year ago, just eight days this year. it was 14 days last year. some county election officials have asked for an extra day sunday for early voting the so far the governor has said, no, it's not going to happen. this country, hillsborough has been a bellwether, they have gone with every presidential winner since 1960. they have a sense their votes could be extremely important in this election. >> gregg: are those lines moving pretty quickly, steve? or do people expect to be able to cast their ballots before they close tonight? >> reporter: the lines will stay open even after 7:00 p.m. tonight if people are still in line. people

florida, virginia, colorado, iowa, it's very close. the toughest state here to make this se ncenario work would be nevada. it's a state a that a lot of republicans and democrats slightly leans in the democratic category. but it's not an implausible scenario. if nobody got 270 then the house of representatives would decide who the president was, but the u.s. senate would vote on who the vice president was. that means the most likely outcome under this scenario is a romney/biden scenario. >> another scenario if ohio is too close to call. >> here's the problem with ohio. they have a new law that says provisional ballots, and these are ballots that are questioned there, maybe somebody didn't bring an i.d., maybe a signature is off, they will let you vote, but you get put in a separate stack. they wouldn't even start counting them until november 17th. today is still november 6th. so in 11 days, let's say the margin is less than 50,000, there's likely to be over 200,000 provisional ballots cast in ohio. they wouldn't start counting those until 11 days. . they wouldn't start counting until then.
